How to Easily Apply and Remove Car Decals

Car decals are a great way to show team spirit. They also help you to find your vehicle in a crowded parking lot. Decals can come in many different shapes, sizes, colors, and themes. The problem with most decals is that they are difficult to remove once you have them on your vehicle.

The following tips will help you with both applying and removing stickers without causing undue stress or damage your paint job:

How to Apply & Remove Car Decals

Applying Your Decals

Once you know where you want your decal to go, make sure to clean the area thoroughly with warm soap and water. Wipe the area dry and trim away any excess material from around the design of your decal. Peel a small area of the backing away and press the decal into place. As you continue to press the decal onto the vehicle, gently continue to pull away from the backing.

Try to keep the decal as smooth as possible, eliminating any bubbles that may begin to form. Make sure not to touch the adhesive on the back of the decal. Once the decal is firmly in place, check for bubbles that may have formed. Use a sharp pin to poke a small hole in the bubble and gently squeegee away any water or air that may have collected. A sharp razor blade can be used to trim away any excess or around any objects that may be in the way.

Removing Your Car Decals and Eliminating Leftover Residue

Removing old decals can leave behind dry, gritty residue that is hard to get off. If you want to remove a decal and any remaining adhesive, the following steps will help:

  • Use warm, soapy water to thoroughly wash the decal and the area around it. Rinse with clear, warm water and pat dry.

  • Heating the decal will loosen the adhesive making it easy to pull away from the glass or paint. A hair dryer is ideal because it won't damage your paint or melt the decal.

  • Once the decal is warm, use a firm edge (a plastic card works great) held at an angle and lift up under the decal. Gradually work your way from one side to the other, lifting the decal as you go. If the decal is on paint, avoid using any type of sharp edge.

  • As soon as the decal is completely removed, apply a small amount of glue remover to the area. Use a soft cloth to gently wipe away the residue. This step may have to be performed more than once.

  • Wash the area one more time to make sure all of the adhesives is gone. It's a good idea to wash the entire vehicle at this time.

If you have old car decals that you want to replace, swap the steps. Removing the old decals first and then, completely cleaning the area will make the area ready for the new ones so all you have to do is basically position, trim, and place.
